In 1997, Britain’s 99-year lease on Hong Kong’s New Territories (bordering Yang Jiechang’s birthplace, Guangdong Province) expired, and Hong Kong was returned to the Chinese. For International 06, Chinese artist Yang has performed a small act of reverse colonising, bringing a very ancient Chinese art – that of acupuncture – to Liverpool. He literally looks at the city as a body, seeing for example the streets of empty, boarded-up houses as Liverpool’s decaying limbs or rotting teeth; he makes a map of the city as traditional acupuncturists make a map of a body – and he applies needles to free the flow of energy. Can this ancient Chinese practice help to heal and revitalise the modern British city of Liverpool?
