Philippe Parreno

Born 1964 in Oran, Algeria.
Lives and works in Paris, France.

All cinemagoers are familiar with the dramatic moment when the curtain swishes back, the projectors begin to turn and the screen flickers into life. When film-maker Philippe Parreno is involved, though, we’d better not settle too comfortably into our seats. Parreno likes to shake up our expectations, finding new and inventive ways to blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, image and reality; and new ways to question the conventions as to where (and how) ‘art’ is presented. His enigmatic work for Liverpool will focus on the mysterious nature of the cinematic image, teasing us with a new twist on Pandora’s box: you can hold it in your hand, you can take it home – but if you open it, what will you be left with?
