Anu Pennanen

Anu Pennanen uses her films to explore the ways in which we live, work and dream within and among the buildings that make up a city. As more and more new buildings spring up in Liverpool – replacing, or simply sitting alongside, the derelict buildings of the city’s past – Pennanen asks: what goes on inside these buildings as the people who inhabit them go about their daily lives? She takes her camera inside the gleaming façades of the new office blocks to show us the rituals, relationships and daydreams of the people who work in them. At the same time, she looks at the city from the ‘outside’ – and literally brings film out of the cinema, to give us a unique vantage point from which to view her images and soundscapes of Liverpool.
