Born 1952, Kiel, Germany, 1952. Lives in Berlin, Germany
Hans Peter Kuhn works with two of the most fundamental elements through which we perceive the world: light and sound. Starting out as a composer for theatre and dance, he gradually moved towards using both sound and light, and from working within buildings to working on a large scale with the outside of buildings. He uses light to transform industrial buildings and urban spaces into magical, glowing places, creating beauty but also holding up a kind of mirror to our surroundings, prompting us to see them in (literally) a new light. What do we see when we look around in Liverpool, a city that has been forced to adapt to changing circumstances but is perhaps unsure of where it is heading? Hans Peter Kuhn’s work is a dramatic realisation of Liverpool as a city full of questions.
